Resident Evil 5 is fast approaching and most of us are trying to get a few games in before it hits in ten days. Something I'm sure to be able to fit in is Legacy of Ys Books I & II for the Nintendo DS. Legacy of Ys is published by Atlus, and combines both of the individually released Interchannel developed DS titles onto one cartridge. The games are based on the Ys Eternal versions of the the series. Atlus is promising the most comprehensive and definitive translation the series has yet received. From my time with the title so far I can say that both games are open from the start. Which is actually a slight surprise for me. I'm also pleasantly surprised to find the talk of severe control issues to be from the out and out insane. You can either control the game with the stylus and have the pure raming into enemies game play or you can use the D-pad and face buttons. With the D-pad you have to hit a button to swing your sword just before impact. I've found this method to be instantly easy to master and very much in the realm of feeling like Ys. The only thing I can think is people are trying to hit the enemy with the sword when it's really more just timing before impact. Impact, as into and through, as opposed to close enough to hit with the sword and away. Holding the button down just before impact initiates an auto combo system will see you safely through the encounter. These versions of the games are in 3D. The 3D comes off as competent for the DS. It's not pushing any limits and it's not trying to. The music initially comes off as very well done on a technical level. All the classic Ys music is there and it's sounding great. I haven't played enough of the game to get a real sense of what Atlus has brought to the translation. We'll have to see how that goes.
